KIDS BIKES
START 'EM YOUNG
Nothing builds a child's confidence better than great early experiences on a bike. Here at CUBE we've ploughed all our expertise into a range of kids' bikes to enthrall, delight and build their skills, whatever their age and experience. From first forays on two wheels to budding racers, we've ensured that every detail from handlebar diameter to brake lever reach is dialled in to your little rippers' needs.
WHICH CUBE KIDS’ BIKE IS RIGHT FOR MY CHILD?
We develop all of our kids’ bikes with the same considerations in mind as those of any parent looking to find the right bike for their child. That’s why our range of kids’ bikes is so diverse, because each child is unique and deserves to enjoy the fun of exploration on two wheels. Each series is designed to meet the needs of specific age groups, riding abilities, and/or the demands placed on kids’ bikes. Our Cubie bikes are the perfect way to begin learning the balance bike and acquiring cycling skills. All of our Acid models are built to withstand the rough and tumble of daily use, from cycling to school, taking family trips or heading on adventures with friends. The step-through Ella series offers added safety wrapped up in a stylish package. From jumps to pump tracks, our Flying Circus bikes are specially designed to help intrepid young riders defy the laws of gravity. The Reaction Kids and Elite Rookie models are based on our adult bikes of the same name, offering kids lightweight options for off-road cycling with proportions perfect for taking on their first races. The same goes for our Stereo Rookie models, which take inspiration from their adult namesake to create capable trail bikes with child-friendly components. While the new Nuroad Rookie takes our expertise in building gravel bikes and condenses it into a bike that's tailored perfectly to the needs of young riders.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW WHEN BUYING A CUBE KIDS’ BIKE?
Our portfolio of CUBE kids’ bikes has a huge selection of different models that cater to all different children and their wide-ranging demands. There are two key factors to consider when choosing the right bike for your child: how will they use it and how tall are they? It is essential to their enjoyment of cycling that your child has a bike in the correct size. Not only is the bike easier to control, it also makes the process of learning to ride easier
Please note that the best way to find a suitable CUBE kids’ bike for your child is to visit your local dealer. They can advise you personally and provide bikes to test ride.
Please read on for some guidance and tips to get you started.
SADDLE & STANDOVER CLEARANCE
Setting the saddle at the correct height helps your child sit comfortably and safely on the bike. For balance bikes and first bikes, when sitting in the saddle your child should be able to place both feet flat on the floor. This helps them when learning balance skills. If your child is already a confident cyclist, the saddle can be raised so that only the balls of their feet touch the floor. The bike’s standover clearance is dependent on your child’s leg length. Standover refers to the height of the top tube from the floor. In order to build confidence when getting on and off the bike and when braking, there should be around 3–5cm of space between the top of their inseam and the top tube. Put another way, the standover height should be 3–5cm shorter than your child’s leg length.
KNEE POSITION
The position of the knee is determined by the saddle height. For beginners we recommend a lower saddle height with a stronger bend in the knee so that it’s easy to put their feet down flat in a difficult situation. Adults and more confident children can raise the saddle until the knee is almost fully extended when pedalling. This allows more power to be transferred through the pedal, which ultimately means more speed! If your child’s knees are almost hitting their elbows when pedalling and they prefer to ride standing up, it’s time to try the next bike size up.
FOOT POSITION
As described above, when learning to cycle, your child’s feet should be able to touch the floor completely. Once they have gained confidence, they only need to be able to touch the floor with their toes. For confident pedalling, the ball of the foot should lie flat on the pedal.
SIZE RECOMMENDATION
HEIGHT
Height is the easiest way to determine which CUBE kids’ bike will fit your child. In our experience, most kids of the same height have pretty similar physical proportions. Assumptions can be made about their inseam length based on their height. Our size recommendations cover a wide range of heights and often overlap.
On each CUBE kids’ bike page, you’ll find a size recommendation based on height and inseam length.
AGE
We have found choosing a kids’ bike based purely on age to be the most difficult, as heights amongst children of the same age can vary hugely. Some five-year-olds can be as tall as other seven-year-olds. Based on our experience, we have categorised as follows.
You might also be interested to know that some of our CUBE adult bikes with 27.5in wheels are suitable for kids aged 12+ with a height of over 150cm.
WHEEL SIZE
Unlike our adult bikes, our kids’ bikes don’t come in different frame sizes. Instead, we offer them with different wheel sizes (in inches). The wheels vary in size from 12in to 29in. This is with the exception of our Elite Rookie, Stereo 120 Rookie and Stereo 140 Rookie models, which are already so closely oriented to our adult mountain bikes that we offer these in two junior frame sizes.
